Koh Kood is an island in the Gulf of Thailand near Cambodia. The island offers a quiet, relaxed atmosphere with paradisiacal beaches far away from the mass tourism of other Thai islands. In this travel guide, we share our experiences on prices, beaches, activities, transportation and accommodation.
How to get to Koh Kood?
Transportation to Koh Kood is easy and inexpensive to organize. Various companies (e.g. Bonsiri) offer transportation from the Thai mainland as part of a complete package. You can start your journey to Koh Kood from Bangkok (Khaosan Road or the airport), Trat or Pattaya. From Bangkok, the transfer by bus and ferry takes around 5 to 6 hours.
You can book your transportation in advance online via 12go Asia or directly at a local travel agency. In our experience, it is sufficient to book the trip a few days in advance.
Island hopping Koh Chang, Koh Mak and Koh Kood
Transportation between the islands of Koh Chang, Koh Mak, and Koh Kood is well-developed, making island hopping a good option. In the peak travel season between October and May, there are several boats a day that will take you from one of the islands to Koh Kood. The fastest connection is by catamaran, but there are also connections by speedboat or a slow wooden boat.
Example: The ferry between the islands to Koh Chang. P.S. Koh Chang is much more touristy than Koh Kood!
Accommodation in Koh Kood
On Koh Kood, you will mostly find luxury resorts and family-run homestays. There are also a few hostels with shared rooms. The resorts are located on the west and south side of the island and usually offer short and direct access to the beautiful sandy beaches. There are many separate bungalows in these resorts with a terrace and sea view.
Cheaper homestays can usually be found on the small “main road”. These accommodations are perfect for travelers on a budget, as they also have a room with a private bathroom and fan or air conditioning. The walk to the beaches is only slightly longer and you can usually reach the beaches, which are mostly public beaches, after less than a minute’s walk through the resorts.
Prices on the island
The price level of accommodation is higher than on the neighboring island of Koh Chang. The inexpensive homestays are few in number and quickly booked out. In contrast, the luxury resorts, which are located directly on the beach, are more expensive. We also found the food a little more expensive than in Bangkok or other places in Thailand.
A small list of prices
- Accommodation Homestay: 20€ per night
- Luxury resort accommodation: 50€-500€/night
- Scooter rental: 6€/day
- Breakfast: 2-3€
- Food (Thai): 2€
- Food (western): 5-10€
- small beer: 1,50€
- Coconut: 1,80€
- Diving course: 400€
Beaches
There are numerous beaches on the west and south sides of the island. All the beaches are white sandy beaches that lead relatively shallow into the water. Great for simply sitting in the water at a water temperature of almost 30 degrees.
For a beautiful sunset, we can recommend Huggy Beach. There is a small, relaxed beach bar with cold drinks, music and some food.
Activities on Koh Kood
The beautiful, clean beaches with bright blue water invite you to enjoy numerous water activities. There are numerous intact coral reefs that you can discover while snorkeling or scuba diving. We can highly recommend a diving course here (Diving school Paradise Divers is highly recommended), as you can learn to dive individually in very small groups (1-2 people).
Renting a kayak or SUP is a good option above the surface of the water. There are several small islands off the coast that you can explore.
On Koh Kood
There are several activities on the island that you can do in addition to your daily visit to the beach. These include a visit to the Khlong Chao waterfall inland. You can also rent a scooter and explore the island and various beaches. There is actually only one small main road on the west coast of the island. The distances are short and traffic is light, so you can reach most places within a maximum of 30 minutes.
